About the Department
The Environment Department of the Velocity Interoperability Network is responsible for the energy used by the physical sites of the Velocity Interoperability Network, for the emissions that follow from it, and for the resilience of those sites. It sets the energy reporting requirements and efficiency targets that apply to member sites, publishes the factors by which reported energy becomes reported emissions, operates a network of monitoring stations, and sets the standards for power, cooling, flood and fire protection against which every site is assessed.
The Department does not own or operate the sites themselves. They belong to the member organisations of the Network, which remain responsible for meeting the standards and for reporting. The Department's role is to set common requirements, to check that they are met, to publish what the Network as a whole uses and emits, and to make sure that what is learned at one site is available to every other.
The Department was established on 6 September 2026. Its milestones are recorded under History.
Responsibilities. The Department's work falls into seven areas.
- Energy reporting
- Setting what member organisations must report about the energy used by their registered sites, and publishing aggregate figures for the Network.
- Efficiency targets
- Setting the targets for power usage effectiveness, consumption and low-carbon supply, and considering applications for revised targets.
- Emissions accounting
- Publishing the emission factors used in Network reporting, calculating the emissions of every site on a common basis and publishing them in aggregate.
- Monitoring
- Operating the monitoring stations at Network sites, checking their readings against the reported figures and extending the network to every data hall.
- Site resilience
- Setting the standards for power, cooling, flood and fire protection, and assessing every registered site against them.
- Site registration
- Keeping the register of the Network's physical sites, their assessment status and the dates by which each must comply with the standards.
- Incidents
- Receiving notifications of resilience incidents, reviewing follow-up reports and sharing what is learned across the Network without identifying the site.
Organisation. The Department is organised in three offices and the Office of the Spokesperson. All correspondence is addressed to contact@environment.gov.vin and passed to the office concerned.
